Surfing in Dakar – Senegalese kite surfing

KITESURFING

Yoff beach is the most suitable for kite surfing almost all year round. You can also contact the Teranga camp in Gandiole as Thierry offers lessons from April onwards on the river (close to Saint-Louis).

SURFING

Surfing has really taken off in Senegal recently and the sport is developing quickly. Ninety per cent of Senegalese surfing takes place between Les Almadies (N'gor Island) and Yoff’s beaches. The Senegalese Surfing Federation organises championships every year and specialist schools and shops are growing in number.

Some surf spots, particularly those to the right of Gorée Island, enable you to surf all year round. Towards N'gor village heading west, there are two spots – the Baie des Carpes as you leave the village and Gauche de Loïc, just opposite the Meridien President hotel. On the other side of the peninsula, i.e. 500 metres as the crow flies, there is another surfers’ haunt – Plage du Secret, which boasts several good spots.

Yoff beach is known as the “Beach Breaks of Yoff” and the most popular spot is just beneath the BCEAO sports centre and Yoff’s beach huts. Ask for Monsieur “Ice” beach or N'gaparou beach (also known as Ebony Beach). The beach is just two minutes away from Kakatar hotel on foot.

You can leave your belongings in the huts and in summer a lifeguard patrols the beach as there are sometimes strong currents. Back at the huts you can enjoy a drink and sample grilled fish and chips for two or three euros. The best season for surfing is generally December to April, but you can surf all year round. There is a surf club where you can sign up for courses and private lessons (see Malika Surf Camp below).

Kakatar hotel has two BIC surfboards available on request
